Intermarine Moves Huge Cold Boxes to Trinidad
Intermarine, a specialist in the ocean transport of oversized equipment, was the logical choice for Marino Crane when faced with the challenge of moving two massive cold boxes from a shallow draft dock in New Iberia, Louisiana to Point Lisas, Trinidad. Each box, more than 150 feet long and weighing up to 300 metric tons was fabricated in New Iberia.
Although the fabrication facility is waterside, the 12-foot maximum draft precludes most deep-sea vessels from accessing the facility. Generally cargo has been moved from the facility by barge. However, safety concerns and delivery requirements precluded use of an ocean going barge for this move. Instead, Intermarine positioned a semi-submersible, Ro-Ro vessel. The vessel with a 244’ long hatch accessible from a 42’ wide stern ramp provided an excellent vehicle to carry the cold boxes, along with the multi-axle transporters used to move the boxes on and off the ship.
