Locomotives for Panama Canal

April 23, 2002

Intermarine completes the last of three shipments of new tow locomotives to the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal. Including the 10 in this shipment, Intermarine has delivered a total of 26 locomotives from Kobe, Japan to the locks. As part of the Canal Authority's billion-dollar ongoing modernization program, the Miraflores Locks is the first to obtain a new fleet of more powerful locomotives. In delivering the units, the Intermarine vessels discharged the locomotives directly onto the rail tracks along side the locks.

These new generation locomotives, manufactured by Mitsubishi Corporation, are about 55 metric tons each and operate with two 290 horsepower traction units. They are capable of towing vessels at a speed of 5 miles per hour, which is almost twice as much as the capacity of the old locomotives. The new locomotives also have an unloaded return speed of up to 10 miles per hour.

Intermarine is a worldwide provider of ocean transport as well as inland heavy haul transportation services for breakbulk, specialized project and heavy lift cargoes. Its global sailings include regularly scheduled services between the United States and the Americas, Asia, and other worldwide destinations. Now also offering U.S. Flag service.
