Loading Reactors in Italy
August 7, 2008
An Intermarine heavy lift vessel loads in Italy several critical components for the Marathon Oil Refinery expansion in Garyville, Louisiana. The pieces included two reactors, the largest a 375-ton heavy lift piece, along with a 135-ton smaller reactor and six 85-ton heat exchangers and accessories. The pieces were loaded in Porto Marghera, Italy for discharge at the Chalmette Slip in New Orleans. The refinery components were discharged direct to two deck barges for the subsequent transport to the construction site near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. For this shipment, Intermarine utilized the Industrial Champ, one of seven heavy lift vessels in the fleet capable of making lifts up to 400 tons.
