Blades for Eastport Maine
May 3, 2009
An Intermarine vessel delivered in late April the first shipment of wind turbine blades to the Port of Eastport in Maine. Manufactured in Brazil, most of the blades are destined for the Rollins Wind project in the towns of Lincoln, Burlington, Lee, Winn and Mattawamkeag. Once complete, the wind project, which is being built by Boston-based First Wind, will comprise 40 General Electric 1.5 megawatt turbines. The wind farm will produce enough power for 23,000 homes, First Wind said.
According to local news reports, some of the blades offloaded at the Eastport docks will also be trucked to wind projects in Nova Scotia and Mansfield, PA.
Intermarine's vessels have been handling wind turbine blades for more than seven years from Brazil to the United States primarily to Houston, but as required, some shipments are also made to US West and East Coast ports.
